A Message from the Board of Directors

From LVGC Secretary of the Board

To: All Members

Subject: Recovery Plan Update

May 2008

We undertook a difficult journey in January of this year, and while we have a long way to go, we have made considerable progress. In the following I will attempt to update you as to our status so you will have accurate, up to date information.

$107,000.00 was raised to pay off old bills, delinquent payments, back rent and judgment from C&J Law suit. All of these were paid; the loan for the “new nine” was rewritten with a more favorable interest rate; the land rent for 2008 ($35,000.00) in being paid by a member. Our attorney (at no cost) negotiated a lower settlement with C&J Leasing saving us $16,000.00. This coupled with the donation (forgiven overdue notes $15,000.00) and some other donations allowed us to put $35,000.00 in to a CD for the 2009 rent. In addition we have $10,000 in savings and we have money in checking!! We hope “to live” the rest of the year on income generated from the course. The fundraiser to work on paying the “new nine” debt is being developed and will begin this fall.

Some of the previous staff members have resigned and others have expressed a desire to continue working. Kathy will continue working in the Clubhouse; Dustin will continue his duties as Course Superintendent and Aaron Cluver, has been hired as Lincoln Valley Golf Facility Manager. He brings to the position nine years experience as an assistant or head PGA Professional/club manager.

Aaron is developing an inventory management system and other best practices for clubhouse operations. These should increase the level of accountability we all want and expect. The club house is now “smoke-free”.

The Board has begun the process of developing Employee Policies for all who work for Lincoln Valley Golf Course. Some twenty policies have been approved and are now in effect. If you want to review these or have any other suggestions on additional area where a policy is needed just visit with Aaron.

At the present time we are actively recruiting members—both past and new. The good news in this area is we have reached our goal for 2008. We currently have 280 members—up from the 200 we had last year. (These numbers reflect lifetime, social and youth memberships for both years). We intend to review the membership rooster to see if reinstating the “9-Mile” has contributed to this increase.

We have begun writing job descriptions for all employees. We hope this will clarify for employees what is expected of them.

Aaron, who has some experience in promotions, will develop a marketing plan and help the Board develop some goals, a schedule and so on in this area. Aaron, with guidance from our accountant and the Board is developing an operating budget for LVGC; putting together plans for youth golf camps and (with the help of the club associations) is looking at scheduling social functions.

We have made positive progress, but realize we have just begun; there is a long way to go. Thanks to all for your generous donations and support to keep LVGC open!!!

A message from the Lincoln Valley staff

Get to know your new General Manager / Golf Professional

First off, I would like to thank the Board of Directors and those members I have already met for making me feel welcome in joining the Lincoln Valley team. Although it has been overwhelming at times with the amount of work on my plate to get ready for the season, I have enjoyed myself in the short time I have been here and look forward to the challenge ahead of me.

To help you get to know me better, I would like to give a little background on where I come from and my work experience. I was born and raised in Illinois where I started playing golf at the age of 8 at the local country club. I have two wonderful parents who just had their 30th anniversary in March and still reside in Illinois. I also have a younger sister who recently got married and works as an elementary school teacher and high school volleyball coach in our hometown.

After high school, I attended the University of Illinois and walked on the golf team there in 1996. I knew soon after beginning college that I wanted to be in the golf business. After the opportunity to manage my home course in 2000, I joined the PGA Apprentice program in 2001. After a couple years as an assistant pro in Illinois, my life's journey took me to the east coast of Maryland. I spent 5 years there working as both an assistant and head golf professional. During my time in Maryland I met the love of my life Meghan Obrien, who was born and raised here in Iowa. Meghan works for Iowa State University and brings with her two beautiful children, 5 year old Connor, and Sophie, who will be 2 in July. We decided last year that we wanted to move back to the Midwest where we belong. Hopefully this brief history will help you get to know me better and I look for-ward to meeting all of you this season.

I also would like to take this opportunity to let you know that I will be offering private and group lessons. With the absence of a driving range it will be a bit of a challenge, but I believe we can make it work. I also will be con-ducting at least 1 junior golf camp this summer. Details will be out soon. The beginning of the year is also a good time to re-grip your clubs. I will be offering this service as well in the coming weeks. Thank you and I hope to see all of you out on the links.

A Word from Your Superintendent, Dustin Eggers

It has been challenging to get the golf season going this year. A long, harsh winter followed by the cool wet spring has made it a slow process. Hopefully the weather will start cooperating soon.

The course has its ups and downs after the winter. The greens held up reasonably well and should get better with warmer temperatures. Some tee boxes did not make it however. The dead grass on many them is perennial rye-grass. Perennial ryegrass does not survive well under prolonged conditions of extreme cold, wind, snow, and ice cover. Decisions will have to be made on how to bring them back into playing condition as quickly as possible. Fairways and roughs have good and bad areas as well. We need to improve drainage in some areas, seed other areas, and minimize cart traffic as much as possible for optimum results. It is simply going to require some time and patience for the course to recover from this past winter.

As a reminder, please keep golf carts on paths around greens and tees and follow the 90 degree rule in the fairway as much as possible. The course has a lot of wet areas and this will help to minimize traffic damage. Also, there has been a lot of volunteer work at the course this spring. Thank you to everyone for your efforts. It is greatly appreciated.

New Policies for 2008

  • The clubhouse has gone to a non-smoking facility as of April 1.

  • In an effort to cut costs and labor, we have implemented a new pin location system. All flags will be yellow with a smaller flag below it. Small flag low = front pin. Small flag middle = middle pin. Small flag high = back pin.

  • The 9-mile rule has been reinstated for the 2008 season. This means if you live within 9 mile of Lincoln Valley, you must be a member in order to play golf or take part in any social activity.

  • In an effort to help myself and the staff get to know our members, we are asking that every golfer check in before going out for your round and present your member card. If you have not received your cards yet, please ask for it your next time out.
